Lakshadweep :-
|
|
Just off the coast
of Kerala are a
widely scattered
group of coral
islands – 36 of them
– collectively known
as Lakshadweep. They
form part of the
Union of India and
are one of the
country’s newest
tourist
destinations. Ten of
the islands are
inhabited by simple,
peace-loving folk
whose language is
close to that spoken
in Kerala.
Lakshadweep is a
union territory of
India -the tiniest
-and has the
country's only coral
islands. Ethnically
, the people of the
islands are very
similar to the
people of kerala
-even their
languages are the
same expect in
Minicoy where mahl
is spoken. As
Muslims, they have
conservative customs
and traditions and
yet they are liberal
in approach.
Perhaps the charm of
lakshadweep islands
lies in their
remoteness. Far off
the beaten track,
they attract no
hordes of meery
makers to their
shores. Or perhaps
it is the beauty of
the islands -densely
covered with coconut
palms and threaded
by an unbroken line
of creamy send, each
island serenly set
in a sea whosewaters
range from palest
aquamarine and
turquise to deepest
sapphire and lapis
la Zuli. Yet again
may be the unique
charm of lakshadweep
lies in the fact
that each island, a
tiny principality in
itself, has excited
from time
immemorial, with
little influence
from the outside
world.
The islanders have lifestyles
and occupations that
revolve around
coconut cultivation,
coir matting and
fishing. Even today,
nothing is actually
produced in the
islands themselves,
and everything comes
from the ’mainland’,
as India is somewhat
quaintly referred to
there. Tourism’s
major focus is on
water sports, as
each of the islands
are surrounded by a
coral reef providing
large areas of
crystal clear water
for everything from
snorkeling to wind
surfing. The five
islands which are
open to tourists
have simple
accommodation in the
shape of beach
cottages.
